What in the heck is cobalamin?

Is a vitamin so imperative? No way! Yes, way! It’s called “cobalamin” aka vitamin B12. Back in the days when healthcare professionals actually cared, they would offer a B12 injection for added protection. Those days are long gone now.

What is vitamin B12:

The chemical name for vitamin B12 is cobalamin. Vitamin B12 is the largest and most complex of all the vitamins.

Vitamin B12 exists in several forms, but cyanocobalamin (CNCbl) is the predominant form found in supplements and fortified foods worldwide. The next most common natural form of vitamin B12, called hydroxocobalamin (HOCbl) is the form normally found in animals.

Other forms of vitamin B12 are seldom encountered in foods or supplements but may be important in certain laboratory tests.

Some medical conditions can interfere with the absorption or utilization of vitamin B12 and/or cause excess body requirements for this nutrient. People at high risk for vitamin B12 deficiency include:
