Just when you thought things could not get any worse in the land of tech, a hacker from an “unauthorized entity” gained access to “some servers and some business processes,” according to US chipmaker Microchip Technology.

Hold up, there is more…

Crucial systems like radar systems, autonomous platforms, image processing, command and control centers, precision strike and missile defense weapons, and Microchip’s crucial role in supplying advanced chips to the US defense industry make this cyberattack very concerning.

The Chandler, Arizona-based business Microchip stated in an SEC statement on Tuesday that it initially discovered “possibly suspicious activities involving its information technology (“IT”) systems” on Saturday.

Even though the firm has not said anything about the incident, cyber site BleepingComputer speculated that ransomware was involved based on the SEC filing. But so far, no ransomware group has taken credit for the hack.

In response to supply chain disruptions caused by Asia, the United States is stepping up its attempts to restore its chip manufacturing base, which coincides with the hacking event.

The fact that this cyberattack crippled chip production for military uses raises serious concerns about the potential impact on contemporary battlefields should the country find itself directly engaged in a big war with Russia and China.

To be continued…
